Strategies for Internet Middlemen in the Intermediation/Disintermediation/Reintermediation Cycle

چکیده
Numerous studies of the interaction between buyers and sellers in a market can be found in the rapidly developing research literature on electronic commerce (EC). This interaction usually takes the form of a transaction process, in which goods or services are exchanged between customers and suppliers. (See Figure 1.) This process may involve none, one or several intermediaries or middlemen, depending on the nature of the goods or services exchanged and other considerations. These intermediaries support the matching of buyers and suppliers, and provide trust to the process (Bakos 1998), essentially assuring that transactions are completed successfully.

Analyzing Firm-Level Strategy for Internet-Focused Reintermediation
We propose a framework for understanding circumstances under which information technology (IT) innovations for electronic commerce (EC) change firmlevel strategic choices, and the economic forces behind these choices, in Internet market competition. We identify a recurring pattern of intermediation, disintermediation and reintermediation: the “IDR cycle.” With this framework, we explain technol...

متن کاملIntermediaries in E-Commerce: Value Creation Roles
Very early in the evolution of e-commerce, predictions were made that a significant degree of disintermediation would occur, i.e., that middlemen would be eliminated from the value chain through the use of the Internet. The reasoning was as follows. The economic benefit of middlemen, or intermediaries, is that they reduce transaction costs for functions that are outside the firm (Coase, 1937). ...

We examine three different scenarios from a long run perspective. The firs...
